Welcome and Intros
Welcome to the RE 3900 blog on literacy in students with disabilities. Our focus throughout the semester will be on how to teach reading and writing to all of the students you (will) serve in your future and current classrooms. To get started, and to make sure you have successfully found this blog, please reply to this post with a brief introduction in "Comments" below. You'll find my intro there already. See you Wednesday.

Students call me Dave, Dr. Koppenhaver, Dr. Dave, or Dr. K. Anything respectful is fine with me. I teach in the Reading Program here at App, and my professional interest is in teaching all children to read and write. My wife is the Asst. Director of the Teaching Fellows Program here at App, and we have 3 sons. The oldest just finished college and is training to become a firefighter. The younger two attend Watauga High School. I'm looking forward to learning with all of you this semester.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Emily Deal. I am a senior and I have already taken block 2 and currently in block 1. I will student teach next fall and graduate in December. I live in Wilkes and commute here every day. It takes me about an hour to get up the mountain, I don’t mind the drive as long as the weather isn’t too bad.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Kasey Lawson and I am from Morganton, NC. I am a junior Special Education major, majoring in both the general and adapted curriculum. I am currently in Block 1 now, but had Block 2 adapted curriculum last semester. I thoroughly enjoyed my internship last semester working with younger students with Autism and older students with LD’s. I enjoy anything outdoors during my spare time, especially fishing! I am also obsessed with SNOW!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Lisa Graupner and I am from Rock Hill, SC. I am a junior Special Education major. I love to read, swim, run, and do outdoor activities. I work at a special needs camp called Victory Junction Gang Camp.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Sara Tate, but I go by Maggie. I am from High Point, NC. I'm a junior Special Education major--Adapted Curriculum. I have a dog named Sugar. I love her like she's my baby...she just turned 5. I love playing games, thunderstorms, eating, watching trashy reality tv shows, laughing, and spending time with family/friends.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Mary Gallimore and I am from High Point, NC. I am a junior transfer student and I am majoring in Special Education (general curriculum). I love to ski, hike, play tennis, watch movies, and just spend time with friends. I work at a summer camp in Maryland where I am a counselor for all ages, including adults with special needs. It is my favorite place to be other than Boone!

ReplyDeleteMy name is Jade Sabo and I am from High Point, NC. I am a junior Special Education major--Adapted Curriculum. I want to move to Charleston, SC and pursue teaching there. I am so excited about becoming a Special Educator and hope to touch as many lives as possible. I enjoy working out, especially running and I am a huge baseball fan!
ReplyDeleteI was born & raised in a small town right outside of Raleigh, NC. I love spending time with my friends & family. In my free time I like to paint & draw. I'm forever making something. I have a black kitten named Pepper that I absolutely adore! I also love beagles! I love football season & Mountaineer football. My favorite NFL team is the Cowboys!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Anamarie Nall, I am a junior from High Point, NC. I am currently in Block 1. I love to travel. I also am a huge snowboarder, every chance I get during the winter. I am also in love with reality TV. My favorite TV shows are the Real Housewives of Orange County and Glee.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Kirsten Buelin and I am from Dobson NC. I am a junior majoring in Special Education, however I am still unsure of whether I want to do the general or adapted curriculum. I first became drawn to teaching special ed. after working with children with physical disabilities at a horseback riding camp. This is also my first year at ASU after transferring from another college.

I am currently seeking licensure for Health and P.E.through the RALC alternative licensure program.I hope to start teaching in the fall in Catawba County and also start coaching football at some level in the near future.I like football,basketball(go heels)and weight training as my hobbies.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Daniella Velazquez. I was born in The Bronx, raised in El Yunke (Puerto Rican rain forest), and now I live in Coffey Hall. I am a great storyteller. I have lots of crazy stories and most of them are true. I want to be a teacher because it is the most important job on Earth. Being a mom is my dream job. I want to teach for a little while then take it home. I want to home school because it will be crazy fun and I want my spawn to have the best education possible. I am racist against lazy and willfully ignorant people.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Andrew McCabe. Im originally from Orlando Fl., but I have been in NC for about 15yrs. My wife is a certifed art teacher and she is currently looking for work, here in western NC. I am seeking my licensure as an EC teacher and I look forward to learning how to teach people how to read. I think the skills to teach reading are absolutely essential to any teacher, and especially an EC teacher. I think this will be a unique class, and I enjoyed meeting everyone.
ReplyDeleteHi I'm Elicia Carter, most everyone calls me Lee. I want to become a special ed. general curriculum teacher. I would like to teach in the public school system. I was born and raised in Boone. I do not know if I will stay here to work or if I will move away. I currently work at a vet and have two cats of my own. When I have the free time I love to work out, cardio workouts are my favorite.

ReplyDeleteHi my name is Elizabeth Stephens; I'm from Hickory, NC. I am a senior and I plan on becoming a general curriculum special education teacher. I want to teach general special education at the secondary level and preferably in a large city. My spare time is filled with work; I work at App Ski Mtn. and Dan'l Boone Inn. If you can't find me at work or school you can most likely find me with friends or playing pool.
