Welcome and Introductions
Welcome to the Fall 2010 RE 3900 blog on literacy instruction and assessment for students with disabilities. Our focus throughout the semester will be on how to teach reading and writing to all of the students you (will) serve in your future and current classrooms. To get started, and to make sure you have successfully found this blog, please reply to this post no later than Sept. 5 with a brief introduction in "Comments" below. You'll find my intro there already. Looking forward to learning with you.

Students call me Dave, Dr. Koppenhaver, Dr. Dave, Dr. Kopp, or Dr. K. Anything respectful is fine with me. I teach in the Reading Program here at App, and my professional interest is teaching all children to read and write. My wife is the Asst. Director of the Teaching Fellows Program here at App, and we have 3 sons. The oldest is training to become a firefighter. The younger two attend Watauga High School. I'm looking forward to learning with all of you this semester.
ReplyDeleteHI,. My name is Dorothea Smith and I am happy to be taking this class. Most of ya'll already know me. I have 3 children, a full time job as a TA in a self contained classroom, and am a senior at ASU taking classes at night. I look forward to what I'll learn in this class.
ReplyDeleteHello, my name is Pamela Rice. I go by Pam. I am a student in the College of Education seeking my BS in EC Education. I have 2 grown daughters, an adopted son and 3 grandchildren. I work as a TA in the EC department at Collettsville Elementary School. I love all children and many adults. I really enjoyed our first class and can't wait to see all of you in 2 weeks, until then have a safe and exciting holiday!
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Susan Bean. I was unable to attend our first class due to an upper respiratiory infection. Now with antibiotics, I am on the mend. I am pursuing a BS in EC education. I work at Granite Falls Middle School as the Title I Coordinator and also work in the EC department. I enjoy my job and interacting with the students. I live with and take care of my mother. I have four older brothers that are married and have 7 nieces and nephews.
ReplyDeleteHello :) My name is Laura Chrisco. I am an ASU student taking classes to earn my Bachelor's in Special Education. I started at ASU in the Fall of 2009, and am taking as many classes as I can to graduate as soon as possible. My husband and I have four wonderful children. I enjoy the convenience of the evening classes, and am thankful for the opportunity to finish my degree. I look forward to taking this class and learning how to help others read.
ReplyDeleteHello.My name is Mary Law.I am a senior at ASU earning my BS in Special Education. I am also a mother and grandmother to a wonderful family that includes my son Shawn, his wife Jessica, and their two beautiful daughters Makayla and Channing. I am currently employed with Hickory Public Schools as an EC teacher assistant. I enjoy my job and interacting with all the students and my colleagues. I also enjoy teaching in children’s ministry at my church. I look forward to finding those keys to unlock reading for my students.
ReplyDeleteHello. My name is Melinda Benfield. My husband and I have two children. I am a EC TA and a EC bus driver. I currently work 11 hours a day and I am taking 4 classes this semester including the practicum. We are very active in our church. We are active in our children interests.
ReplyDeleteHey my name is Eric Stamey and I am seeking a BS in special education at ASU. I work at Hibriten High School as a one-on-one ECTA. I enjoyed all the intros on Monday night and I look forward to learning how to teach students how to read and write.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name Is Ashley Hartsoe. I work at Lake Electric Company and take classes at night. I am married, no children, I have a dog named Roscoe. I am excited about this class because I really enjoy reading and I hope to find ways to pass my love of reading on to my students.
ReplyDeleteHi My name is Tiffany Patterson. I have worked for Iredell-Statesville School System for the past six years. This will be my fifth year at Third Creek Elementary. I love my school and my students (on most days). I have three crazy, wild, and wonderful children. Cecily 13, Wesley 16, and Kennede 9. They keep me busy!! I am trying to achieve my BS in Special Education with the hopes of working with Children with Austism. I throughly enjoyed Monday nights class and look forward to learning more.

ReplyDeleteHi my name is Rosie Simmons. I have 3 sons. My oldest is 24 and graduated from ECU and lives in California. My middle son goes to NCSU and is majoring in Civil Engineering. He was home this summer doing an internship with DPI. My youngest son is 19 and is a sophomore at ASU majoring in Business Administration. I am looking forward to this class to be able learn best teaching practices to teach to students in our EC programs.

I have 2 sons, a 14-year old who plays on the soccer team at Alexander Central and a 9-year-old soccer star in the 5th grade. :) I was a stay-at-home mom for 13 years who worked part time for my husband's therapy practice (payroll, A/R, etc.), volunteered in my sons' schools for the last 10 years and held temporary Title I and tutor positions in their schools. Now I am pursuing teacher licensure through ASU. I LOVE working with elementary students in helping them learn to read and write and teaching them to love learning!

ReplyDeleteI'm Niki Humphries. I have two girls, 12 and 4. They are the center of my world. I'm secretary at Liberty Middle School. I have typed this message 7 times now and lost it each time I try to post, so all the glorious information I included before has gone by the wayside at this point.

ReplyDeleteHi this is Melissa Scott and I would like to first say that I'm sorry to be posting a day late. My computer got a virus and crashed on me Thursday and I had to go to Charlotte to get my new Mac. Now I am up and running and looking forward to this semester. I am a single mother to a wonderful and energetic two year old, as well own a small jewelry business which I love. After receiving my BS in Special Education from ASU I hope to enter the masters program to become a reading specialist. I want to give children the best advantages possible to succeed in life and view literacy and reading skills as cornerstones to this goal.
